Why a roof valley handles more water than the surrounding field
A valley is created where two roof planes slope toward one shared line. Water from both planes enters that channel before it continues toward an eave, gutter, scupper, lower roof, or another drainage detail. The valley assembly may include underlayment, metal flashing, shingles or tile cut lines, battens, fasteners, sealants in limited locations, and the deck below.
Valley types vary. Some expose a metal channel, while others place roofing closer to the centerline. On a tile roof, the tile is the durable surface covering, but water that reaches below it still depends on underlayment and flashing to continue downslope. A useful inspection identifies the actual assembly instead of assuming every valley should look the same.

1. A ceiling stain follows a diagonal line or grows downslope
A stain that follows framing, a ceiling joint, or the projected valley line is a useful location clue. It is not proof that water entered directly above the stain. The inspection should map the interior symptom to the roof and then trace the valley upward and downward.
2. Leaves, seed pods, mud, or roofing debris collect in the channel
Debris can slow water, redirect it toward cut tile or shingles, hold moisture against materials, and hide a changed seam or fastener. A ground-level photograph may show a buildup, but clearing a steep or wet valley is not a homeowner safety task. The inspection should document what was removed and the condition exposed below it.
3. Tile or shingles beside the valley are cracked, shifted, or missing
Adjacent roofing helps direct water into the valley without exposing vulnerable edges. Monsoon wind, foot traffic, impact, age, or earlier work can change that route. The repair scope should identify how much roofing must be removed, what can be reused, how matching replacement material will be handled, and where the new work ties into sound material.
4. Valley metal is bent, lifted, corroded, punctured, or separated
Where metal is visible, look for a changed edge, open lap, unusual fastener, hole, crease, or surface deterioration. Not every discoloration is a leak, and not every valley exposes metal. A close photograph needs a wider companion view showing slope, water direction, nearby penetrations, and the complete run to its termination.
5. Underlayment is exposed, wrinkled, cut, patched, or deteriorated
Underlayment helps manage water beneath tile and around flashing. If it cannot form a dependable lap into or beneath the valley detail, replacing a surface piece may not restore the hidden route. Controlled tile removal may be needed to establish the condition, and concealed findings should be photographed before they are covered.
6. The valley ends at a wall, lower roof, gutter, or transition with staining
A valley termination must discharge water without forcing it behind wall flashing, over a vulnerable edge, beneath a low-slope membrane, or past an undersized opening. The lowest visible defect may be caused by a problem higher in the valley, while a sound upper valley can still leak at its termination. Both the channel and the receiving detail belong in the same inspection record.
7. The leak appears only during heavy or wind-driven monsoon rain
Light vertical rain may not reproduce a condition that appears when runoff volume rises or wind pushes water across the valley. That pattern helps narrow the investigation but does not prove one material failed or that the storm created the defect. Record timing and direction, then compare those observations with the valley geometry and surrounding conditions.
The National Weather Service warns that monsoon thunderstorms can produce lightning, damaging winds, blowing dust, flash flooding, and rapidly changing conditions. Stay indoors during threatening weather and leave wet, hot, steep, or damaged roof access to trained professionals.

A useful valley inspection works from context to detail. Wide photographs identify both contributing roof planes and where the valley begins and ends. Mid-range photographs show adjacent roofing, walls, penetrations, prior repairs, and drainage. Close photographs record metal, underlayment, cut edges, fasteners, seams, cracks, debris lines, and exposed substrate.
The inspection should distinguish visible facts from possible water paths. If tile or shingles must be removed to inspect concealed layers, the proposal should describe the planned opening, temporary weather protection, documentation, and how the area will be closed. If moisture testing is proposed, ask what the method can and cannot establish.

The written scope should name the removal boundary, reusable and replacement roofing, underlayment integration, metal or flashing work, fasteners, compatible sealant locations, debris cleanup, and final photographs.
Broader work deserves discussion when deterioration continues beyond the visible valley, moisture has affected decking, adjacent underlayment cannot provide a reliable lap, multiple patches have failed, or surrounding roofing cannot be removed and restored predictably. The recommendation should explain the evidence and stopping point instead of relying only on roof age.
Temporary covering or sealant may reduce immediate exposure in some dry, safe conditions, but temporary work must be identified as temporary. Ask how it affects later removal, which weather conditions are required, and when the permanent valley assembly can be inspected and restored.

- Is the valley open, closed, metal-lined, or part of another assembly?
- How far will tile or shingles be removed on each adjoining plane?
